FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
THURSDAY DECEMBER 28
This is the title of a schooltext book well-known to Harry Potter and fellow pupils at Hogwarts, the wizardry academy. J K Rowling published an edition of the book in 2001 in aid of Comic Relief, and she then wrote the screenplay - making her debut screenplay - for the award-winning film that Cropredy Film Society will be screening on Thursday December 28.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a fantasy film for all the family, an extension of the wizarding world from the Harry Potter series. Released in 2016, it’s directed by David Yates, who also directed four of the films featuring Harry Potter. It runs 133 minutes and features Muggles, niffters, squibs, No-Majs (that’s all of us?), the sinister organisation MACUSA, Legilimens, and Aurors, hunters of dark wizards.
Eddie Redmayne – who we have seen in The Danish
Girl and his Oscar-winning performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory
of Everything – plays Newt Scamander, a magizoologist expelled from
Hogwarts and arriving in New York in 1926 on a mission to catalogue the
world’s magical creatures. Accidents, confusion, skulduggery and mystery
abound, as well as amazing visual effects and wizards both good and evil.
The cast includes Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Ron Perlman
and Colin Farrell. The film was nominated for five BAFTAs and won an
Oscar for Best Costume Design.
A sequel is in production for release in November next year titled: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Johnny Depp plays Gellert Grindelwald, and makes a brief appearance in this film. Many of the production team and artists who worked on Fantastic Beasts also contributed to Paddington and Paddington 2.
Tickets are now on sale at The Bridge Stores at £5, which includes a complimentary glass of mulled wine or a soft drink on arrival.
Please bring a festive picnic as well as your drinks to the village hall at 7:00 p.m. We will provide wine glasses.
