“Split second decisions, stunning effects and a classic Hanks performance combine to strong effect”

Chesley Sullenberger (Sully) is an American pilot who became a hero after gliding his damaged plane onto the Hudson river in New York, in order to save the flight’s passengers and crew.  The film follows the enquiry that followed this incredible successful emergency landing of an Airbus A320, as the pilots are accused of reckless tactics endangering the lives of all on board.

Starring Tom Hanks as Sully, Aaron Eckhart as his co-pilot, Jeff Skiles

Directed by Clint Eastwood.                                                    1 hr 36 minutes

From Sullenberger’s biography:

15 January 2009

Airbus A320-214  has just taken off from LaGuardia airport heading south to Charlotte, and was 2,900 feet above New York, travelling at 3.83 statute miles a minute, that’s  316 feet per second.

“The birds  were about a football field away when I first saw them ...

Sullenberger (3:27 and 10.4 seconds into the flight)  Birds!

Skiles 3:27:11   Whoa!

:27:11:4   Sound of thumps, thuds, following by shuddering sound

Skiles:  3:27:12  Oh shit

Sullenberger:  3:27:13  Oh yeah

3:27:13  Sound similar to decrease in engine noise/frequency begins

Skiles   3:27:14  Uh-oh

“40,000 pounds of thrust pushing your 150,000 pound plane uphill at a steep angle and the thrust suddenly goes away – completely – it gets your attention.:”

3:29:55   Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning system:  Pull up. Pull up, Pull up

Skiles: 3:30:03  Two hundred and fifty feet in the air

3:30:23:  Terrain, terrain.   Pull up, pull up

Sully 3:30:38  We’re gonna brace!

About three minutes after the bird strike, and with both engines destroyed, the plane landed on the Hudson river with 155 passengers and crew members

“The entire flight was five minutes and 8 seconds long.  The first minute and forty seconds were uneventful.  Then, from the moment I said “Birds!” until we approached the water and I said “We’re gonna brace!”  just three minutes and twentyeight seconds had passed.   That’s less time than it takes me to brush my teeth and shave ...”
