Winter Bad Weather Emergencies . . .

Don’t forget to stock up early for the coming winter: An early reminder to check stocks of fuel and order supplies of oil, coal, etc in good time, so you are not caught out by sudden early snowfalls.

Can you help out in bad snow conditions?  Can you lead or be part of a team that clears roads and pathways?  . . . Government information on clearing snow and ice

The Government’s information website contains useful guidelines on how individuals should clear snow and ice.  Full information can be found at:  Here is a summary:

·        You can clear snow and ice from pavements yourself. It’s unlikely that you’ll be sued or held responsible if someone is injured on a path or pavement if you’ve cleared it carefully.

·        Do it early in the day - it’s easier to move fresh, loose snow

·        Don’t use water - it might refreeze and turn to black ice

  • Use salt if possible - it will melt the ice or snow and stop it from refreezing overnight (but don’t use the salt from salting bins as this is used to keep roads and pavements clear)
  • You can use ash and sand if you don’t have enough salt - it will provide grip underfoot
  • Pay extra attention when clearing steps and steep pathways - using more salt may hel 

Prolonged Loss of Electricity Supply

Advice on being prepared for power cuts

Western Power Distribution has comprehensive advice on its website:   Some key points include: Have a phone hand set that plugs straight into the phone socket; keep a torch handy; have a wind up or battery powered radio; use a surge plug to protect computers; make sure that any medical equipment has battery back up.  If there is a prolonged loss of electricity and you find yourself in an urgent or distressed situation, you should telephone the electricity distributor (NOT the company you pay your bills to).  This is Western Power Distribution and its emergency 24 hour line is:

Would you be in a vulnerable position if there was an unexpected/ prolonged loss of electricity?

There is information about what “vulnerable” members of the community can do on Western Power Distribution (WPD)’s website  Anyone who is dependent on electricity for medical reasons can join WPD’s Priority Services Register. They will need to provide their name, address, telephone number and the reason for being medically dependent on electricity or vulnerable. WPD will then give them a direct number to call in event of a power cut; WPD will ring to tell them about planned power cuts and will give them a password, if necessary, before visiting them so customers will feel safe.

The Thames Valley Local Resilience Forum has published a detailed guide for all individuals and families setting out the steps they should take to be ready for all emergencies, from major disasters to seasonal conditions such as severe winter weather.  The booklet is called “Are You Ready?” and copies can be downloaded from this link, at the bottom of the Community Resilience page

Cropredy Community Defibrillator

The Community Defibrillator is fully installed in a bright yellow cabinet close to Cropredy Surgery entrance.  This life-saving machine gives the heart a controlled electric shock (defibrillation) in some cases of cardiac arrhythmia or arrest. It is not a replacement for the 999 service, but a controlled shock to the heart within five minutes of collapse provides better chances of survival. . During normal surgery hours the Doctors and Nurses will be available to use the defibrillator, and when it is closed, volunteers have been shown how the machine works and have the key code for the cabinet. The ambulance service also has the code and will give it to any caller reporting a potential cardiac condition within a half mile radius of the defibrillator.  In an emergency always dial 999 first before trying to contact a volunteer. Defibrillator schemes do not replace the ambulance service, but help save lives once an ambulance has been called. (CPR should be applied before arrival of the defibrillator if possible.)

Message in a bottle

This scheme is offered by the Lions charity, which provides the bottles and stickers.  Vulnerable individuals keep their medical information in the bottle in their fridge and put a sticker on their front door to inform emergency response teams that their bottle is in the fridge.  Bottles are free of charge and can usually be found in the local Chemist or Doctors Surgery.
